LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England - Former NCAA champion Luke Donald, recently graduated from Northwestern, was among the notables who did not qualify for the British Open. This will mark the first time in three years Donald has not competed in the event considered one of pro golf's major tournaments.
Donald carded 74-71--145 on the Fairhaven course Sunday and Monday, missing the cut by six strokes. Eight players advanced to this weekend's tournament from Fairhaven: Jean Hugo (135), Matthew Cort (135), Mark Sanders (136), Matthew Griffiths (137), Juan Carlos Aguero (138), Mikko Ilonen (138), Stuart Wilson (139) and Graham Rankin (139).
A total of 33 golfers at four different sites qualified for the British Open Sunday and Monday, out of a field of 384 who were attempting to qualify.
Donald will be competing with the Great Britain & Ireland team at the Walker Cup, amateur golf's version of the Ryder Cup. The Walker Cup will take place August 11-12 at Sea Isle, Ga.
