EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's golf team finished 12th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Ponte Verda Beach, Fla. NU shot rounds of 289-312-286=887 (+23). The Wildcats shot their best round of the tournament Tuesday with a 2-under-par 286. Florida won the event with a team score of 849 (-15). As a team, NU improved 26 shots from a disastrous second-round 312.
Individually, senior Luke Donald finished sixth, five shots behind tournament medalist David Bennett of North Florida. Donald shot rounds of 67-74-70 for a 5-under-par score of 211.
Freshman Tom Johnson finished in a tie for 33rd after rounds of 73-75-71=219 (+3). Junior Chris Thayer moved up 19 places with a third-round 70, his best round of the tournament by seven strokes. Senior David Shaffer bounced back from a 93 in the second round to card a final-round 75.
