MADISON, Wis. — No. 44-ranked Northwestern hits the road for the first time in Big Ten play this season, facing No. 30 Wisconsin on Friday, March 13, at 5:30 p.m. CT before taking on No. 51 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., on Sunday, March 15, at noon CT.
This past weekend, the Wildcats (13-4, 1-1 Big Ten) went 2-1, recording victories over Washington and Creighton. Northwestern defeated Washington, 4-2, on Friday night and beat Creighton, 4-0, on Sunday night. At the No. 1 doubles position, junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate went 3-0, picking up two wins over ranked doubles teams. In singles, junior Cyrus Mahjoob, the team's No. 2, and first-year Cooper Han, who appeared at both No. 5 and No. 6 over the weekend, both registered two victories.
Northwestern's 13 wins are tied for the most in the conference, and its .765 win percentage ranks fifth in the conference. The Wildcats' 13-4 record is their best start to a dual season through 17 games since 2016 (15-2). It is also tied for the program's second-best start under Head Coach Arvid Swan. Northwestern's return to a top 50 ranking this season is its first time in the top 50 since the 2023 campaign. From Jan. 18-Feb. 14, the Wildcats held a nine-match winning streak, the program's longest streak since winning nine straight to open the 2017 dual season. Northwestern has eight sweeps this season, its most in a campaign since 2023 (9).
Pate and Casey check in as the ITA's No. 26-ranked doubles team in the nation. They are Northwestern's highest-ranked doubles team since April 28, 2021 (Simen Bratholm and Nick Brookes, No. 22). The sixth-ranked doubles pairing in the Big Ten, Pate and Casey have competed at the No. 1 doubles spot for the Wildcats and boast an unblemished 13-0 record. Their 13 wins are the most by a Wildcat duo since the 2022 dual season, when Bratholm and Brian Berdusco, as well as Natan Spear and Trice Pickens tabbed 13 wins. Pate and Casey are the first Northwestern duo to register 13+ wins at the No. 1 doubles spot since at least the 2018-19 season.
Playing primarily at No. 2 doubles for the Wildcats, Mahjoob and junior Ethan Schiffman have posted a 7-4 doubles record together.
Pate, who has competed at the No. 1 slot in both singles and doubles in the majority of his matches, leads the team with 11 victories in singles (11-5) and 14 wins in doubles (14-1). Pate's 25 total wins lead the team. He holds a 7-5 record at No. 1 singles, making him the first Wildcat to have 7+ wins at the No. 1 singles spot since the 2023 dual season, when Steven Forman tallied 11 (11-4).
Behind Pate, Schiffman — a transfer from Cal — has tallied the second-most wins on the team with 19. He has a 10-3 singles record, playing primarily at No. 4 slot, and a 9-4 doubles record. Mahjoob ranks third with 16 wins, as he has a 9-4 singles record and seven doubles wins.
Han is yet to lose a match in his college career. Competing at the No. 6 singles position in all but two matches, Han has a 9-0 singles record, as well as a 3-0 doubles record. His nine singles wins are the most by a Northwestern first-year since Presley Thieneman in the 2021 dual season (12).
The Wildcats have won eight consecutive matches against the Badgers (10-2, 1-1 Big Ten), dating back to the 2021 dual season. Northwestern leads the all-time series 71-43-4. Last weekend, Wisconsin opened Big Ten play by splitting its matches against Michigan and Michigan State on the road. The Badgers' Michael Minasyan, the squad's No. 1 singles player, ranks as the No. 80 singles player nationally, and their No. 1 doubles team of Oliver Olssson and Tomas Zlatohlavek checks in as the No. 78 doubles team in the country. The Wildcats are eyeing their first top-30 victory since Feb. 4, 2024, when they defeated No. 8 Duke. Northwestern last recorded a top-30 victory on the road on Feb. 5, 2023 — a 4-3 victory over No. 25 Duke.
Sunday's match against the Cornhuskers (8-5, 0-2 Big Ten) will be the 17th meeting between the two squads, with Northwestern leading the all-time series 14-2. The Wildcats' two losses in series history have come in each of the past two seasons, as Northwestern seeks its first victory against Nebraska since April 14, 2023. The Cornhuskers come off a weekend in which they lost a pair of matches to Michigan State and Michigan, 4-1. Nebraska is led by Leo Linquet, who has posted a 7-5 record at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots this season.
The Wildcats return home to Combe Tennis Center to host No. 46 Michigan State on Friday, March 20, at 6 p.m. CT and No. 43 Michigan on Sunday, March 22, at 11 a.m. CT.
