LINCOLN, Neb. — No. 44 Northwestern fell in its road matches against No. 30 Wisconsin and No. 51 Nebraska this weekend.
The Wildcats (13-6, 1-3 Big Ten) lost 4-0 to the Badgers (11-3, 2-2 Big Ten) on Friday night. Northwestern dropped the doubles point and the No. 2, No. 1, and No. 4 singles matches. The lone Wildcat to take a set was junior Ethan Schiffman at the No. 3 singles position. He won his second set 6-3 and was preparing to begin a third set when the match concluded.
On Sunday afternoon, Northwestern took an early 2-0 lead before suffering a 4-2 defeat to the Cornhuskers (9-6, 1-3 Big Ten).
Northwestern opened its match against Nebraska by claiming the doubles point, winning on all three courts. At the No. 1 slot, junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate were first to finish, tabbing a 6-4 victory. The No. 26-ranked duo in the country, they moved to 14-0 on the campaign. It marks the most wins by a Wildcat doubles pairing since at least the 2019 dual season.
The matches on the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts finished nearly simultaneously. Junior Owen Megargee and first-year Cooper Han, playing their first match together this season, tabbed a 6-3 win at No. 3, while Schiffman and junior Cyrus Mahjoob, at No. 2, registered a 6-4 win result.
Pate, at No. 1 singles, was the first to finish his match and prevailed 6-4, 6-2, to tab his team-best 12th singles win of the season. He recorded his first career singles victory in conference play, as he missed all of the Big Ten slate last season due to injury.
The Cornhuskers won the matches at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions to secure a victory. Schiffman, playing at No. 4, was in the midst of a third set when the match concluded after he won the second set 6-4.
Northwestern returns home to Combe Tennis Center to host No. 46 Michigan State on Friday, March 20, at 6 p.m. CT and No. 43 Michigan on Sunday, March 22, at 11 a.m. CT.
