Wildcats Split Saturday Doubleheader

2/8/2026 12:01:00 AM | Softball

TEMPE, Ariz. – Facing off against two of the premier pitchers at the Kajikawa Classic, Northwestern split a doubleheader at Arizona State on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats earned a decisive 7-1 win over Texas State in the first game of the doubleheader, avenging a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Bobcats from Friday, before falling to Arizona State, 8-0, in six innings in the nightcap.

Signe Dohse turned in a complete game gem in the win over Texas State, tossing a career-high 7.0 innings–the first complete game of her career–while allowing 1 run (0 earned runs) and striking out a career-high seven batters.

Six different Wildcats recorded hits against the Sun Belt Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Madison Azua, as three 'Cats (Grace Nieto, Kelsey Nader and Tru Medina) recorded multi-hit efforts.

Nieto posted a career-high four RBI against Texas State, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. The fifth year got the scoring started for the 'Cats in the second inning, coming through with a two-out, two-RBI double with the bases loaded that ultimately cleared the bases and brought her home to score after a throwing error. In the bottom of the fourth, Nieto cashed in again with a two-RBI single to extend the Wildcats' lead to six.

Medina, fresh off homering in the seventh inning of Friday's game vs. Texas State for her first-career hit, continued to stay hot at the plate as she reached base three times and went 2-for-2 with two runs scored against the Bobcats.

Kansas Robinson posted her first hit of 2026 in a big way, pouncing on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the third inning for a solo home run. It marks the 29th home run of Robinson's career.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the 'Cats' bats were stifled by 2025 First Team All-American Kenzie Brown of Arizona State, who posted 12 strikeouts.

In the circle, Marina Mason made her second start in as many days and turned in another solid effort to begin her collegiate career. The Brentwood, Tennessee native surrendered just one run in 4.0 innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four.

Nieto and Emma Raye each recorded hits against the Sun Devils, with Raye singling down the left field line to lead off the fifth inning, while Nieto recorded a two-out triple in the top of the sixth inning. Both Raye and Nieto have now posted hits in all four of the Wildcats' games to kick off the 2026 season.

Northwestern wraps up its trip to the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday at 11 am CT with a weekend finale matchup vs. Memphis.
