NU Claims Road Win, Two Home Sweeps

2/1/2026 9:57:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. — For the second consecutive weekend, Northwestern men's tennis went undefeated, opening with a 6-1 road win over Alabama on Friday before returning home to Combe Tennis Center to sweep Xavier and Chicago State in a Sunday doubleheader.

"Alabama was a great win on the road. Beating an SEC team on the road is never easy," Head Coach Arvid Swan said. "We played very well over there, competed great, had really good support amongst the guys, and obviously good to get two wins today."

To open the weekend, the Wildcats (6-2) defeated the Crimson Tide (3-4), 6-1. NU began the match by capturing the doubles point, as juniors Cyrus Mahjoob and Ethan Schiffman won 6-3 at No. 2, while the No. 1 pairing of junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate recorded a 7-5 win over the No. 66-ranked doubles pairing in the nation in Matic Kriznik and Vit Kalina.
Senior Chad Miller, playing at the No. 5 slot, was the first Northwestern player to claim his singles match with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph. First-year Cooper Han followed suit with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position. No. 2 Mahjoob clinched the match for the Wildcats with a 7-6(5), 6-2 ranked win over Kriznik, the No. 27-ranked singles player in the nation.

"I was just kind of putting my head down and working," Mahjoob said. "I could really feel the support from the guys around me, which was awesome. Just kind of looking around, seeing Arvid, Chema, they trust me so much when I'm playing my game."

Casey, at No. 3, and Schiffman, at No. 4, tabbed victories of their own with scorelines of 7-6(3), 6-3, and 4-6, 7-5, [10-7], respectively. With the result, Northwestern logged its first nonconference road win since March 5, 2023 — a 4-0 sweep of Princeton.

In the Wildcats' return to Evanston on Sunday morning, they opened with a 4-0 sweep of the Musketeers (1-5) with a strong doubles showing. At the No. 3 position, Miller and Han won 6-1, followed by a 6-2 triumph by Casey and Pate at No. 1 for the duo's second doubles victory of the weekend.
"I think we got some really good pairings right now, and we're playing with a ton of energy," Swan said. "I think we're holding serve at a high rate. Guys have good chemistry between them."

Pate quickly gave Northwestern its second point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 result at the No. 2 singles slot. No. 5 Miller had another dominant singles display to turn out a 6-3, 6-0 win, and Schiffman at No. 4 clinched the match for the Wildcats with a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory.

Taking the courts later in the day to face the Cougars (0-5), the Wildcats turned in their first 7-0 result of the season. Strong doubles play remained a staple for Northwestern, as Mahjoob and Schiffman secured a 6-1 victory at No. 1 before Pate and junior Owen Megargee tabbed the same scoreline to assure the Wildcats the doubles point.
Playing at the highest position of his career at No. 5, Han gave Northwestern a 2-0 lead and became the first Wildcat this season to record a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

"He's a really good player," Swan said. "He was a blue-chip recruit, so we knew he would step in and win for us right away."

Making his Northwestern debut in spring singles, sophomore Dylan Charlap, playing at the No. 6 singles position, posted a 6-1, 6-1 win. The bottom half of the Northwestern lineup continued its success, as No. 4 Miller clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.

Rounding out the weekend for the Wildcats, No. 3 Schiffman (6-0, 6-2), No. 2 Pate (6-3, 6-3), and No. 1 Mahjoob (6-4, 6-4) recorded wins.

Northwestern's 6-2 record is its best start to a dual season since 2022, and with the Wildcats sitting on a six-match win streak for the first time since 2023, Swan is telling his players not to get complacent.

"Just got to keep improving. I think we've made a lot of progress, but there's a lot more to go," Swan said.

Northwestern hits the road next weekend when it travels to face Memphis on Sunday, Feb. 8. First serve is set for 11 a.m. CT.
