‘Cats Claim 4-2 Win at Memphis

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's tennis extended its winning streak to seven when it defeated Memphis, 4-2, on the road on Sunday afternoon.
Despite dropping the No. 3 doubles match to the Tigers (5-2, 1-0 American), the Wildcats (7-2) won a tightly contested doubles point, with both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches going to tiebreaks.

At No. 2, junior Cyrus Mahjoob and junior Ethan Schiffman faced off against the ITA's No. 87 doubles team in Marcos Castro Fabra and Sam Reeve. Mahjoob and Schiffman fell behind 3-0 in the tiebreak before winning seven of the next eight points to win 7-6(4).

The fate of the doubles point was left in the hands of the Wildcats' No. 1 pairing of junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate. After trailing 5-3 in the tiebreak, the duo won four straight points to tab a 7-6(5) victory against Moritz Kudernatsch and Maxime Dubouch, the country's No. 83-ranked team, to secure the doubles point for Northwestern. Casey and Pate are now 6-0 on the season together.
On the singles side, No. 4 Schiffman was the first player to finish his singles match, notching a 6-4, 6-2 victory, to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Memphis proceeded to win at the No. 2 and 3 singles spots to even the match at 2-2.

First-year Cooper Han, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, broke the deadlock with a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) triumph at the No. 6 spot. Han came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set.
To clinch the match for Northwestern, No. 1 Pate saved multiple match points to claw back from a 5-1 deficit in the third set. He tabbed a 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, 7-5 victory, his team-leading seventh singles win of the season, to give Northwestern a 4-2 victory.

Junior Chad Miller, playing at the No. 5 position, was one point away from winning his match when the match concluded. He led 7-6(5), 4-6, 5-3, 40-15.

The Wildcats have now won two non-conference road matches this season, after they defeated Alabama last weekend. The team's 7-2 record is its best start to a dual season since 2022.

Northwestern returns to Combe Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 14, for a doubleheader against Marquette and Illinois State. First serve for the match against the Golden Eagles is set for 10 a.m. CT, while the match against the Redbirds will begin at 4 p.m. CT.
