Last-Minute Score Lifts No. 25 Northwestern to 24-21 Win at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Jackson Kleather drilled a 34-yard field goal in the final five seconds to lift No. 25 Northwestern football to a dramatic 24-21 victory over Michigan State on Saturday in Spartan Stadium.

“We didn’t expect anything less,” Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach David Braun said. “That’s a great football team over there. It’s hard to win on the road in the Big Ten. We’re not going to play from a platform of fear. We were aggressive at the end of the game. Great stop by our defense; our offense goes down and executes — what a finish.”

The Wildcats (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) erased an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to knock off the Spartans (2-4, 0-4 Big Ten).

Aidan Chiles completed 18-of-27 passes for 226 yards. He rushed for 25 yards and a touchdown.

“There was never a doubt,” Chiles said. “We knew we were going to win this game. We just didn’t know how.”

Caleb Komolafe led the Northwestern ground game, amassing 67 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts. Komolafe added 51 yards on four receptions.

Hauling in a game-high six catches, Griffin Wilde led NU with 57 receiving yards — 29 of which came on the game-winning drive.

The Wildcat defense held Michigan State to 89 rushing yards and a 3-of-12 rate on third downs. Braydon Brus logged a career-high 15 tackles. Jon Jon Stevens Jr. posted 10 stops, while Kobie McKinzie added seven tackles. Michael Kilbane recorded a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in the win.

After Kilbane’s strip sack and fumble recovery deep in MSU territory, Kleather nailed a 39-yard field goal to give Northwestern a 3-0 lead with 8:23 remaining in the first quarter.

The Spartans jumped ahead 7-3 on their ensuing drive, which Alessio Miliovojevic capped off with a 3-yard rushing touchdown.

With 11:04 to play in the first half, Komolafe provided the response on a 10-yard rushing touchdown to help the ’Cats retake the lead. Komolafe’s score bookended a 12-play, 75-yard drive.

Michigan State recaptured a 14-10 lead in the half’s final minute, with Miliovojevic tossing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Williams.

Northwestern possessed the ball for more than half the third quarter on an extended 14-play drive, which ultimately ended in Kleather’s second field goal conversion of the afternoon. Kleather’s 37-yard kick cut the MSU advantage to 14-13 with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter.

With 11:48 left in the game, Miliovojevic connected with Chrishon McCray for a 53-yard touchdown, extending the Spartan lead to 21-13.

Chiles led the Wildcat offense on a methodical drive to tie the game at 21-21 with 7:24 remaining. The quarterback first punched in his seventh rushing touchdown of the season before finding Alex Honig for the two-point conversion.

While Michigan State had the ball in the red zone with less than two minutes to play, Brendan Flakes blocked the Spartans’ field goal attempt, keeping the score tied.

“Before the play, I [knew] I had to make a play,” Flakes said. “I just had a feeling. It was like slow motion. It went right into my hand.”

Taking over with just 65 seconds on the clock, the NU offense drove down the field to set up Kleather’s game-winner.

“It’s just the resolve. In the first half, there were a lot of missed opportunities,” Braun said. “There were a lot of moments throughout the fourth quarter when it could’ve been in doubt, and they just stayed true to the process and took it one play at a time.”

The Wildcats will return home to face Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Ryan Field. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Peacock and NBCSN.
