CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Northwestern had its four-game winning streak in season openers snapped on Wednesday evening in a 3-1 loss at No. 11 Virginia.
The Cavaliers (1-0) grabbed an early lead in the seventh minute, doubled their advantage in the 21st minute and extended their lead in the 41st minute. The win gave Virginia its 14th straight win in a season opener.
Northwestern (0-1) got on the scoreboard when senior midfielder Holland Carey notched her first career goal in the 90th minute. After the Wildcats earned a free kick with the clock winding down, Carey beat her defender and headed the service from sophomore defender Gabby Anderson past the UVA keeper, giving Anderson her first career assist.
Senior goalkeeper CJ Roy made her first career start, recording five saves. First-year Naomi Lofthouse made the start in her first game as a ‘Cat, and her classmates Amber Weaver, Elle Phillips and Gwen Zimmerman all made their debuts as substitutes.
Northwestern returns to Evanston for its home opener against Syracuse on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. CT on B1G+. Admission is free for Northwestern soccer home games all regular season long.
