NU to Meet Cardinals, No. 20 RedHawks in Louisville

9/11/2025 2:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. - Building off its first ever four-shutout start to a season, the No. 1 Northwestern field hockey team (4-0) is headed to Louisville, Ky., to continue its non-conference slate. The Wildcats will face Louisville (3-1) and No. 20 Miami (OH) (3-0) at Trager Stadium on Friday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 14 respectively.

Redshirt first-year goalkeeper Juliana Boon has made an early mark on the season, earning Big Ten and National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Defensive Player of the Week awards.

Scouting the Cardinals
With 14 games of history against the Cardinals, Louisville leads the all-time series 9-5. Meeting for the first time in 2000, the teams' last match up was a 2-0 road victory for NU in 2024.

Louisville concluded its 2024 campaign with a 6-11 (.353) record. The Cardinals' season ended in the regular season with a 6-2 win at UC Davis. The Cardinal's 2025 squad features three NFHCA Preseason Watchlist honorees in Izzy Bianco, Lauren Masters and Rylie Wollerton.

Scouting the RedHawks
NU leads the all-time series against the RedHawks through 21 games, with a dominant 20-1 tally. Meeting for the first time in 1988, their last matchup was a 9-2 victory for the 'Cats in the Second Round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Miami (OH) concluded its 2024 campaign with a 14-8 (.636) record. Miami University's 2025 offense has been led by Justina Intzes, Berta Mata and Malena Sabez, each having notched six points. Graduate Back Mata is the lone RedHawk to appear in the 2025 NFHCA Preseason Watchlist.

Northwestern Notables
Last weekend, the Wildcats defeated No. 5 Duke, 1-0, and No. 8 Boston College, 2-0, in top-10 battles at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. NU came out of the weekend undefeated with two ranked wins. The two shutouts accomplished the first season opening stretch in program history with four clean sheets.

Grace Schulze led the 'Cats offense on the weekend in Durham, notching four points with two goals against the Eagles. Aerin Krys collected two points on two assists, one at No. 5 Duke and another against No. 8 Boston College.

Boon posted nine saves at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, as she became the first goalkeeper for the 'Cats since 2003 (Sherri-Anne Nyberg) to collect four shutouts as a first-year. Boon is also the first goalkeeper to log four consecutive clean sheets for NU in their first season since Shannon Small in 1990. The redshirt first-year currently leads the conference and nation in goals allowed (zero). With 12 saves through her first four collegiate starts, allowing zero goals by opponents, Boon's defensive efforts have helped Northwestern remain the only NCAA DI team that has not allowed a single goal.

The 'Cats added seven newcomers in the offseason, including transfer talents Kate Janssen, Kerry McCormick and Schulze from Delaware, Old Dominion and Princeton, respectively.

After claiming their second national championship in four years, and eighth Big Ten regular season title, the 'Cats look ahead to attack their 2025 slate. Over half of Northwestern's 2025 opponents appear in NFHCA preseason rankings.

The 2025 captains for Northwestern are Greta Hinke, Krys and Zimmer.

NFHCA Week One Ranking: No. 1. The Sept. 9 ranking maintains NU's top position, following its first ever unanimous preseason No. 1 from the NFHCA. The Wildcats spent six weeks in the No. 1 spot last season en route to winning the program's second national title.
