Schulze, ‘Cats Take Clutch 2-1 Overtime Win at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite trailing with two minutes left in the game, the No. 1 Northwestern field hockey team (5-0) fought and found a way to come out victorious Friday night, defeating Louisville (3-2), 2-1, in overtime.
The Wildcats' offense showed resilience, as Piper Borz scored the tying goal late in the fourth quarter to force extra time. Three minutes into overtime, Grace Schulze scored her fifth goal of the season to secure the 'Cats win.
The late offensive push overcame a determined Cardinals defense. The 'Cats were without Ashley Sessa, due to a red card in the previous game, but got the job done on the road to remain undefeated.
In the first quarter, Northwestern controlled the field, taking three shots on goal and holding Louisville without a shot. Cardinals goalkeeper Emily Young kept the 'Cats off the scoreboard, making three saves to keep the game scoreless through fifteen minutes.
Early in the second period, Louisville attacked the NU goal, and after a save from Juliana Boon, Cardinals' forward Gigi Edwards put away the rebound to give UL a 1-0 lead. The 18th-minute goal marked the first allowed by the 'Cats in the 2025 season. The first half concluded with a total of 10 shots from Northwestern, with seven on goal and saved by Young. Despite two saves from Boon and four corners, the Wildcats trailed 1-0 headed into the break.
The second half got off to a quiet start, with only one shot on goal between the teams (Maddie Zimmer) in the third quarter. Late in the final period, NU nearly evened the scoreboard, but a video review overturned a would-be goal on an obstruction call. With four minutes to go, the 'Cats pulled Boon for an empty net to gain an additional offensive player.
With careful defense and a strong drive from Aerin Krys, Borz evened the score with her first goal of the season with two minutes remaining in regulation. After review, the goal stood, sending the game into overtime.
Olivia Bent-Cole took the first shot in extra time, but was denied with Young's ninth save of the game, tying her career-best. Schulze, however, stuck with the shot which stayed behind Young. The graduate transfer cashed in off the rebound, claiming the sudden victory for NU.
Boon allowed one goal and notched two saves in the Friday night matchup. Following the game, the redshirt first-year remains the leader in the Big Ten in save percentage (93.3%). The 'Cats are now 42-2 in non-conference regular season games since 2021, and have won 39 consecutive regular season matchups.
Up next, NU takes on No. 20 Miami (OH) on Sunday, Sept. 14 in a neutral-site game at Trager Stadium at 10 a.m. CT.
