ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Northwestern men's tennis (11-13, 3-6 Big Ten) dropped a pair of matches on the road this weekend, falling at the hands of both No. 31 Michigan State (13-7, 8-2 Big Ten) and No. 23 Michigan (14-8, 8-2 B1G).
On Friday evening, the Wildcats fell in a 6-1 match in East Lansing. The Spartans earned an early advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and never looked back, taking each of the first six points of the match.
After Michigan State had already clinched, Chad Miller provided the Wildcats' sole point of the evening with a super-tiebreak victory at No. 5 singles. The 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win improved Miller to 13-5 in singles play this dual season, including a 5-1 mark in conference play.
In the second match of the weekend, Michigan also used the doubles point to gain the first lead of the day. The Wolverines' doubles wins came at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
In singles play, the Wolverines continued to dominate, taking all six first sets. They would go on to win in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to finish off the 4-0 team victory over Northwestern.
Before his match was abandoned, Miller had battled back to a 6-4 win in the second set, forcing a third set at the No. 5 spot. Max Bengtsson was up 2-1 in the second set of his match at No. 4 singles when it went unfinished as well.
Northwestern men's tennis will close out the home half of its season next weekend in Evanston. The 'Cats are set to host Penn State at 5 p.m. CT on Friday before celebrating Senior Day ahead of a noon matchup with Ohio State on Sunday.
