EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 67 Northwestern men's tennis (12-14, 4-7 Big Ten) split a pair of matches to close the home portion of its regular season schedule over the weekend, defeating Penn State 4-1 on Friday before falling to No. 4 Ohio State 4-0 on Sunday.
After Penn State (13-8, 4-7 Big Ten) took the doubles point in the weekend's opening match, the Wildcats came out strong in singles play on Friday evening. Northwestern took five of six first sets against the Nittany Lions, with the only loss coming in tiebreak fashion.
At No. 4 singles, Max Bengtsson tied the match up at one-all with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Reiya Hattori, good for his 12th win of the season in dual singles play. Next up, Felix Nordby defeated Sam Bossem 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. The victory began with a six-game comeback in set one for Nordby, who notched the 7-5 set victory after falling behind 5-1 to start.
With the 'Cats up 2-1, first-year Vicent Yang put them on the brink with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles - the second Big Ten victory of his first season. Then, Saiprakash Goli clinched match point at No. 1 singles, where he defeated Charl Morgan 6-3, 6-4 to secure the 4-1 team victory for Northwestern.
Sunday's match against No. 4 Ohio State (22-2, 11-0 Big Ten) was preceded by Northwestern's senior day ceremony. The 'Cats honored graduating seniors Goli, Bengtsson and Nordby ahead of the final home match of their careers.
Northwestern battled through doubles against one of the nation's top teams before eventually dropping matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to give the Buckeyes the first advantage. Ohio State never looked back from there, taking all six first sets before clinching the match with straight-set victories at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 4 singles to secure the sweep.
The 'Cats will wrap up their regular season schedule next weekend on the road with a trip to visit new conference foes Washington and Oregon. Friday's match in Seattle is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, while Sunday's action in Eugene is set for a 3 p.m. CT first serve.
