EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 67 Northwestern Men's Tennis (12-13, 3-6 B1G) returns to Evanston for the final two home matches of the season this weekend against Penn State and No. 4 Ohio State. The 'Cats will face the Nittany Lions on Friday at 5 p.m. CT, then the Buckeyes on Senior Day, Sunday, at noon.
Despite a tough weekend for the Wildcats on their Michigan road trip, Chad Miller improved to 13-5 in singles play with a victory over David Saye of Michigan State at No. 5 singles last Friday.
The first foe of the weekend, Penn State (12-11, 0-9 B1G), arrives in Evanston still seeking its first conference dual win of the season. The Nittany Lions' most recent match ended in a sweep of Division I newcomer Mercyhurst. Prior to that victory, the last win for the Nittany Lions came on February 16 against Georgetown. Despite the team record, Penn State boasts a top-60 singles competitor in Loren Byers, who ranked 55th in the latest ITA release. Byers enters Friday with a 16-9 record, having won each of his last three completed matches in straight sets.
Northwestern holds a 27-8 all-time record against Penn State after winning each of the last four matches against their east coast rivals. The most recent meeting ended with Miller securing a match-clinching victory at No. 6 singles for a 4-2 'Cats victory last season.
No. 4 Ohio State (20-2, 9-0 B1G) enters the weekend hot; they've won every match since mid-February, giving them the second-best winning percentage in the nation. The Buckeyes are riding a 13-match win streak, with a matchup against Illinois preceding their Sunday meeting with the 'Cats. Both of Ohio State's losses this year came at the hands of Top-25 teams in February: then-No. 4 Wake Forest and then-No. 21 UCF. Helping the Buckeyes is a trio of ranked singles competitors: No. 10 Aidan Kim, No. 60 Alexander Bernard and No. 92 Jack Anthrop. Also in the national rankings is the duo of Bryce Nakashima and William Jansen, who form the 60th-ranked doubles pairing in the country.
Northwestern is set to celebrate Senior Day before the Sunday match against the Buckeyes, recognizing Max Bengtsson, Felix Nordby and Saiprakash Goli in their final collegiate dual matches at home. The ceremony is scheduled to begin 15 minutes ahead of first serve.
Following this weekend, the 'Cats will close out the regular season next weekend with a west coast road trip to their new conference foes, Washington and Oregon. They'll travel to Seattle to face the Huskies on April 18, then to Eugene to battle the Ducks on April 20 in the regular season finale.
