COLUMBUS, Ohio - Northwestern Men's Tennis (12-16, 4-9 B1G) is set to open play at the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, with a first-round meeting with Michigan. The 10th-seeded Wildcats will take on the No. 7 seed Wolverines at 1 p.m. CT, and action is available to stream on B1G+.
Despite two losses for the 'Cats this past weekend, Chad Miller continued his dominance at No. 5 singles with a victory in straight sets in the regular-season finale on Sunday. Miller has been victorious in each of his last three finishes in singles competition, and has also won three of his last four finishes at No. 1 doubles alongside partner Felix Nordby. Including the victories on Sunday at Oregon, Miller wrapped up his regular season with a 14-6 record in dual season singles play and a 12-9 record in dual season doubles action.
No. 7 Michigan (14-11, 8-5 B1G) finished its regular season with a three-match losing streak, falling to ranked opponents UCLA, USC and Michigan State. The Wolverines landed at No. 28 on the ITA Men's Tennis National Rankings on Tuesday, with three singles competitors listed in the top 125: Gavin Young at No. 51, Will Cooksey at No. 60 and Benjamin Kittay at No. 73. Young and Kittay as a duo are ranked 24th in the nation as well.
Michigan has dominated the all-time series against Northwestern historically, entering play Thursday with a 80-28-1 record against Northwestern and an 11-match winning streak intact. The run includes the most recent meeting, which occurred this regular season on April 6. This year's tournament will be the third straight to see the two teams match up in postseason action; the Wolverines have ended the 'Cats' run in the conference tournament in the quarterfinals in both of the past two years.
The winner of Thursday's first-round match between Northwestern and Michigan will advance on to face No. 2 seed UCLA in a quarterfinal battle on Friday. That match is set for 12:30 p.m. CT.
