‘Cats Punch Ticket to Postseason Despite Losses to Washington and Oregon

4/20/2025 8:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EUGENE, Ore. - No. 70 Northwestern men's tennis (12-16, 4-9 Big Ten) has secured its spot in the 2025 Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament, the conference announced Sunday. The 'Cats enter the tournament as the No. 10 seed, and will take on No. 7 seed Michigan in the competition's first round this Thursday, April 24.

The tournament is next up for the 'Cats after they finished their regular season on the road, where they dropped a pair of matches to No. 39 Washington (16-7, 8-5 Big Ten) and No. 54 Oregon (13-12, 5-8 Big Ten) over the weekend.

The Huskies controlled Friday's match from start to finish, defeating Northwestern 4-0 in Seattle. After taking the doubles point, Washington picked up victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles as well en route to the sweep. Ahead of the finish, Felix Nordby won his first set at the No. 2 position, and Max Bengtsson also picked up a set-one victory at No. 4 singles. Both players were tied at a set apiece when their matches were abandoned.

On Sunday, Northwestern played Oregon closely in doubles action. The Ducks came away victorious at the No. 3 spot, but the 'Cats fought back with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles from Nordby and Chad Miller. The deciding match came at the No. 2 position, where Oregon eventually triumphed to clinch the match's first point.

The Wildcats briefly evened things up at one-all, as Miller took the first singles point of the afternoon at No. 5. His 6-4, 6-4 victory would be the only one Northwestern would get, however, as Oregon picked up wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 2 singles to clinch the 4-1 team victory. Bengtsson and first-year Vincent Yang both picked up a set apiece, but their matches went unfinished.

With the regular season in the rear-view mirror, Northwestern will head to Columbus, Ohio, for Big Ten Tournament action. The 'Cats will play in one of two first-round matches on Thursday, then competition will continue on with quarterfinal action on Friday. Should Northwestern beat Michigan, next up for the 'Cats would be No. 2 seed UCLA.
