SEATTLE, Wash. - Northwestern Men's Tennis (12-14, 4-7 B1G) heads west this weekend to close out its regular season against No. 39 Washington and No. 54 Oregon. The 'Cats are set to face the Huskies on Friday at 7 p.m. CT, then face the Ducks on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
Northwestern split their matches last weekend against Penn State and No. 4 Ohio State, defeating the former and falling to the latter. The Wildcats used four singles wins to down the Nittany Lions: Saiprakash Goli, Felix Nordby, Max Bengtsson and Vincent Yang all defeated their opponents in straight sets to lock up a 4-1 'Cats' victory.
The upcoming weekend's action will begin against Washington (15-6, 7-4 B1G), who goes into the weekend undefeated in the month of April after victories over Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue and Indiana. The Huskies' last loss came at the hands of UCLA on March 30. Heading into the final weekend of regular-season play, Washington's Cesar Bouchelaghem is ranked No. 35 nationally by the ITA in singles action.
Washington is an unfamiliar opponent for Northwestern; the Friday matchup will be the programs' first since 2002, when Washington claimed a 6-1 victory. It will be the eighth meeting between the two teams all time, with Washington leading the all-time series 4-3.
Next up for the 'Cats will be the 54th ranked Oregon Ducks (11-12, 3-8 B1G), who have fared half as well as Washington in April. Oregon has split its last four matches against the same opponents as Washington, most recently falling in a 4-2 loss to Purdue. Coming into the weekend, Luke Luemkeman and Vlad Brezau are both ranked in singles play for Oregon at No. 104 and No. 110 respectively. Brezau is 14-7 in 2024-25 dual action, while Luemkeman is 8-12.
Northwestern will be looking to avenge a sweep they suffered to Oregon last season. However, the 'Cats won the previous two meetings: a 4-3 thriller in 2022, and a dominant 6-1 win in 2005.
Ahead of the final weekend of Big Ten play, Northwestern sits ninth in the conference standings. With the top ten teams in the conference earning bids to the Big Ten Tournament, a win in either of the 'Cats' two matches this weekend would punch their ticket to the postseason. The Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament is scheduled to take place in Columbus, Ohio, from April 24-27.
