'Cats Beat Badgers to Open Big Ten Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis (8-8, 1-1 Big Ten) started its Big Ten season in style on Friday, winning a 5-2 victory over No. 58 Wisconsin (6-4, 0-2 Big Ten) in the conference opener. The win was part of a 1-1 weekend for the 'Cats at Combe Tennis Center.

After the Badgers and the 'Cats traded doubles victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots respectively, Chad Miller and Felix Nordby locked up the match's first point with a tight 7-5 victory at the No. 2 position.

However, Wisconsin quickly tied things back up at one apiece with a win in straight sets at No. 5 singles. The back and forth continued as singles play progressed. First-year Vincent Yang earned the first conference victory of his collegiate career on court six, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Wisconsin's Sachiv Kumar. The lead didn't hold for long, though, as the Badgers captured their second team point of the match at No. 1 singles.

Then, playing at No. 3 singles, Greyson Casey gave the 'Cats a lead they would never relinquish. His 6-4, 7-5 victory put Northwestern up 3-2, then Nordby's 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 win at No. 2 clinched the victory. Following the deciding match, Miller played out a super tiebreak set and won 10-8, bringing the match to its final score of 5-2 in favor of the Wildcats.

Conference play continued Sunday for Northwestern as the 'Cats hosted No. 48 Nebraska (8-4, 1-1 Big Ten). Miller and Nordby kicked off the action with their second doubles victory of the weekend, but it wasn't enough as the Cornhuskers won the remaining two matches to take a 1-0 lead.

With victories at No. 1 and No. 6 singles as well, Nebraska opened up their early advantage to 3-0. The 'Cats didn't go quietly, however; Nordby made it a perfect 4-0 weekend with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win at the No. 2 spot, then Miller nearly evened the score with a three-set victory at No. 5. While Casey and Max Bengtsson both won first sets against their singles opponents, though, both would eventually fall, giving Nebraska a 5-2 victory.

A weekend of conference play under their belt, the Wildcats will take to the road to continue their schedule next weekend. They'll visit Indiana on Friday, where play is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CT, then head to Purdue for a 2 p.m. CT match on Sunday.
