EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's tennis battled through a trio of matches against Top-15 opponents this weekend during the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships, hosted at Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats took on No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Stanford and No. 15 Pepperdine in their weekend slate.
The Wildcats opened tournament action with a doubles win at the No. 2 position, where Erica Jessel and Sydney Pratt took down their opponents 6-2, but Northwestern couldn't come away with the doubles point as the Bulldogs took the other two courts. Georgia's dominance continued through singles, as they won matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 in straight sets to finish off the team victory. Britany Lau and Pratt were both up a set on their opponents when their singles matches went unfinished.
Northwestern was back on the court on Saturday, taking on No. 4 Stanford in consolation action. Once again, Pratt and Jessel opened play with a decisive doubles win - this time beating their opponents 6-0. After the Cardinal took doubles No. 1, Kiley Rabjohns and Neena Feldman secured the deciding match at doubles No. 3, winning 7-5 to put the 'Cats up 1-0 early.
In singles action against Stanford, Pratt continued her successful weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position. It wasn't enough for Northwestern, however, as the Cardinal stacked a trio of singles victories on the other side to clinch the match, 4-2. Though her match went incomplete, Jessel was tied at a set apiece with Stanford's Connie Ma, ranked the No. 18 singles player in the nation by the ITA.
To close out their weekend, the 'Cats faced off with the No. 15 Pepperdine Waves on Sunday night in Combe. Pepperdine clinched the match's first point, but only after Rabjohns and Feldman picked up their second doubles victory of the weekend. Seeing singles action for the first time in the tournament, Feldman dominated, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 6 position to provide the 'Cats' sole point of the match. Pepperdine closed out the evening with wins on three singles courts, securing victory by a final score of 4-1.
Pratt finished the weekend with a 3-1 overall record, including a 2-1 mark in doubles play and a 1-0 singles performance. Feldman also posted a 3-1 mark, with two doubles wins and a singles victory to add to her resume.
The 'Cats will continue their home stretch next Sunday, when they're set to host UIC and Milwaukee in a doubleheader at Combe Tennis Center. Play against the Flames will begin at 10 a.m. CT, then first serve against the Panthers is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
