Mayfield Upsets No. 16 Lillard as 'Cats Fall to No. 23 Indiana in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 19 Maxx Mayfield pulled off an upset victory on Saturday afternoon at Indiana, taking down the nation's No. 16 wrestler at 165 lbs in a 9-6 decision. Mayfield was one of four 'Cats to come away victorious at Wilkinson Hall, but it wasn't enough as No. 23 Indiana (7-3, 3-3 B1G) defeated Northwestern (2-6, 0-5 B1G) by a final score of 25-13.

In a rematch of the Midlands' championship match at 165 lbs, Mayfield exacted revenge against Indiana's Tyler Lillard. Lillard got out to an early lead with a first-period takedown, but Mayfield fought steadily back over the following minutes. With two escapes and a penalty point going Northwestern's way, the match was tied halfway through the second period when Mayfield registered his first takedown of the bout to gain his first lead. Another takedown early in the third provided the insurance, and Mayfield ended victorious by a final score of 9-6.

Mayfield's win was the third in a row for the 'Cats after both Sam Cartella (149 lbs) and Trevor Chumbley (157 lbs) picked up victories. At 149 lbs, No. 24 Cartella took down his opponent, Joey Buttler, once in each of the first two periods to open up a 6-0 lead. While Buttler put himself on the board in the third with a reversal, Cartella used the riding time point to finish off a 9-2 victory by decision. The win was Cartella's fifth of dual season and his fourth in Big Ten action.

Chumbley, ranked ninth in the nation by InterMat, also started his bout's scoring with a takedown in the first period. After a scoreless second frame, Chumbley opened up the lead in the third with his second takedown of the afternoon, bringing the score to 7-1 in his favor. Then, with under 20 seconds left in the bout, he finished off a single leg takedown to secure a bonus-point victory - an 11-2 major decision.

The 'Cats picked up their fourth and final win of the day at 197 lbs, where No. 13 Evan Bates put himself back in the win column with a 6-2 decision over No. 21 Gabe Sollars. All of Bates' offense came in the third period, including a final takedown that was completed with just one second left on the clock. Including today's victory, Bates has registered eight wins this season against wrestlers ranked in InterMat's Top-33 at the time of the bout.

The Wildcats return home to continue their Big Ten slate next Friday against Michigan State. Action in Welsh-Ryan Arena will commence at 7 p.m. CT and be streamed on B1G+.
