EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling (3-6, 1-5 B1G) came out on top of a B1G battle against Michigan State (4-6, 0-5 B1G) on Friday night in Evanston, winning seven of ten bouts en route to a 27-12 victory inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The match began at the upper weights, where Jon Halvorsen (184 lbs) earned his first conference win in a thrilling overtime victory over Lucas Daly. After each competitor logged an escape in regulation, neither was able to notch a takedown in a two-minute sudden victory period. Halvorsen secured the victory with an escape in the first tiebreak period, followed by a rideout in the second tiebreak.
At 197 lbs, Evan Bates improved to a 5-4 dual record by recording his first pin in Big Ten action. The No. 13 ranked wrestler dispatched of No. 25 Remy Cotton quickly, commanding the action with two takedowns and a pin in just under 90 seconds.

Navarro began the scoring with a reversal in the middle of the second period, followed by four near-fall points soon after. In the third, Navarro grabbed two takedowns to secure a bonus-point victory for the 'Cats, 13-2.
After the break, Massey Odiotti kept things going for Northwestern with a major decision of his own at 133 lbs. Three takedowns in the first period put the sophomore up early, giving him a six-point advantage heading into the second. A reversal in the second period and a fourth takedown in the third gave him the 14-5 victory.
Graduate student Chris Cannon held off Jaden Crumpler for a 6-3 win at 141 lbs. Cannon did his scoring with a takedown, a reversal, and an escape, each coming in different periods. Cannon held off a late effort from Crumpler, who initiated a scramble with 30 seconds remaining, for Northwestern's fifth victory of the night.
No. 25 Sam Cartella has now won eight of his last nine matches after logging a 9-6 decision over Michigan State's Clayton Jones. Cartella accumulated nearly four minutes of riding time en route to his win, which improved him to 5-1 in conference dual action.
