EVANSTON, Ill. - Dedrick Navarro, Massey Odiotti and Sam Cartella all picked up wins on Sunday afternoon in Welsh-Ryan Arena as Northwestern (2-5, 0-4 B1G) fell to No. 8 Minnesota (7-1, 3-1 B1G) by a final score of 29-12.
Wrestling at 125 lbs, Navarro picked up his third straight win emphatically, defeating Minnesota's Quincy Hulverson by fall at the 4:22 mark. Navarro was up 10-0 near the end of the second period when he finished the job with his second pin of the season and his first in dual action. The redshirt first year improved to 3-1 in Big Ten action with the victory.
After Navarro, Odiotti kept things moving for the 'Cats with a 14-7 victory by decision at 133 lbs. He traded escapes and takedowns with Minnesota's Blake Beissel in the first period, ending with a 7-5 advantage after the first three minutes. After a quiet second, Odiotti went back on offense in the final frame, notching two more three-point takedowns to lock up his victory. The decision made it back-to-back wins in conference action for Odiotti.
Northwestern's third victory of the day came at 149 lbs, where No. 24 Cartella upset No. 23 Drew Roberts by 6-3 decision. Cartella jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a first-period takedown - an advantage he would hold through the start of the third. While Roberts managed a takedown of his own in the final minutes, Cartella used two escapes and a minute-and-a-half of riding time to edge him out and pick up his fifth victory of dual season.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the Hoosiers on Big Ten Network. First whistle between Northwestern and Indiana is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, February 1.
