LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a strong doubles performance, Northwestern men's tennis fell to the Louisville Cardinals on the road Monday, dropping a 5-2 match to complete the first weekend of dual season.
Northwestern (2-1) opened the morning's action with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the match's first point. In his collegiate dual season debut, Carter Pate partnered with fellow first year Vincent Yang to win a dominant 6-1 victory. The deciding win was provided by Chad Miller and Saiprakash Goli, who defeated their opponents 6-2 to lock up the doubles point.
In the singles portion of the match, Louisville (3-0) got off to a quick start. The Cardinals picked up victories in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to take their first lead of the match. At No. 3 and No. 4 singles, both Felix Nordby and Pate won first sets for the 'Cats before eventually falling to their opponents in three sets apiece. Chad Miller fought back to an 8-6 tiebreak victory in his second set at No. 6 singles, but ultimately dropped his match, too.
Max Bengtsson provided the sole singles victory for the Wildcats, picking up his second individual victory of the weekend with an 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5) win at the No. 5 position.
Opening weekend behind them, the 'Cats will take a week off before returning to action at home on Friday, January 31. Northwestern is set to host No. 21 Harvard inside Combe Tennis Center at 6 p.m. CT.
