EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling is back in Welsh-Ryan Arena this Friday, set to host No. 15 Michigan in its Big Ten home opener. The Wildcats (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten) and the Wolverines (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) will face off at 7 p.m. CT, with action to be streamed on B1G+.

LAST TIME OUT
The 'Cats fell to both Purdue and then-No. 11 Illinois last weekend in their first taste of conference action. Sam Cartella went undefeated on the weekend at 149 lbs, picking up a 14-0 major decision against Purdue's Isaac Ruble and an upset 6-4 decision over No. 11 Kannon Webster at Illinois. Cartella enters the weekend with a 10-5 record overall, including a 4-1 mark in dual action, and a No. 23 spot in the most recent InterMat rankings. No. 18 Maxx Mayfield (165 lbs), No. 12 Evan Bates (197 lbs) and Dedrick Navarro (125 lbs) all also notched individual victories in last weekend's duals.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines enter the weekend at No. 15 in the NWCA Coaches Poll after amassing a 3-1 record across four dual matches. Most recently, they dropped a narrow 19-18 dual to Big Ten opponent Maryland last weekend. Heading into action Friday, InterMat ranked seven Wolverines in the top 33 at their weight classes: No. 11 Sergio Lemley (141 lbs), No. 15 Chase Saldate (157 lbs), No. 21 Beau Mantanona (165 lbs), No. 28 Joseph Walker (174 lbs), No. 20 Jaden Bullock (184 lbs), No. 3 Jacob Cardenas (197 lbs) and No. 10 Josh Heindselman (285 lbs).

SERIES HISTORY
The 'Cats are 3-19-2 against Michigan since the programs' first meeting in 1990. The Wolverines have won each of the last seven duals dating back to 2011, including the most recent one in 2019. Last time Northwestern came out on top of a match-up with Michigan was February 21, 2010 - a 20-16 'Cats victory in Evanston.
