Three 'Cats Pick Up Victories as Northwestern Falls to No. 15 Michigan

EVANSTON, Ill. - Trevor Chumbley made his return to the mat with a ranked win at 157 lbs on Friday evening in Welsh-Ryan Arena, but the 'Cats fell 26-10 to No. 15 Michigan. Chumbley was one of three 'Cats to pick up individual victories as Northwestern (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) dropped their Big Ten home opener to the Wolverines (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten).

For the second straight match, Dedrick Navarro opened the event with a victory at 125 lbs for the Wildcats. After a scoreless first period, Navarro got the scoring started with an escape and a takedown to take a 4-0 lead in the second. From there, he racked up eight near-fall points in the third to earn a major decision, blanking Michigan's Wilfried Tanefeu 14-0.

The 'Cats kept things rolling at 133 lbs with Massey Odiotti, who picked up his second dual meet victory of the season with an 8-6 decision over Nolan Wertanen. Odiotti book-ended the bout with takedowns in the first and third periods to go along with an escape and the riding time point en route to his win.

Chumbley, ranked No. 10 by InterMat, took the mat for the first time in over a month to face off with No. 15 Chase Saldate in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament meeting. The 157-pounder registered a takedown one minute in to take an early 3-0 lead over Saldate. From there, Chumbley racked up nearly four minutes of riding time over the first two periods, securing the point before the third had even begun. An escape in the final period gave Chumbley the final point of his 5-0 decision, which improved him to 3-0 in dual meet action this year.

The 'Cats will be back on the mat in Welsh-Ryan Arena next weekend, when they host another top-15 opponent in the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Action between the two programs will begin at noon CT on B1G+.
