LONG BEACH, Calif. - Wildcat volleyball returns to action this Thursday as they prepare for a pair of matches at Long Beach State. Northwestern (0-2) will take on The Beach (0-2) on Thursday at 9 p.m. CT, then face off with them again on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Though they couldn't come away with a win last weekend in Las Vegas, the 'Cats had some solid individual showings in a pair of five-set losses. Graduate setter Alexa Rousseau picked up where she left off last year, impressing in her first action of the season. Rousseau finished the weekend with a team-high 81 assists alongside 14 kills. She is now just 238 career assists away from moving into fifth in program history.
Junior Buse Hazan also logged some stand-out sets in her first action as a Wildcat. The transfer from South Florida led the 'Cats in kills during their time in Las Vegas, racking up 31 total across both matches last weekend. Her five service aces also paced Northwestern's roster through the first two matches.
Like the 'Cats, The Beach lost both of their season-opening contests, going 0-2 against a pair of Top-10 programs last weekend at the Oregon Invitational. They fell in straight sets to No. 4 Pittsburgh on Saturday, then lost 3-0 again on Sunday to No. 10 Oregon. Long Beach State is coming off a 21-10 season in 2023 that saw them finish fourth in the Big West.
This weekend's meetings will be the second and third ever between these two programs, which first met in 2004. That match, which took place in Long Beach as well, went in favor of The Beach, 3-0.
Following their time on the west coast, Northwestern will return home for their 2024 home opener, scheduled for next Wednesday, Sept. 12. The 'Cats will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Welsh-Ryan Arena, with first serve set for 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for that match and all the 'Cats' home contests in 2024.
