EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 69 Northwestern Wildcats are back home for their final pair of regular season matches this season, hosting both No. 70 Indiana and Purdue this weekend in Evanston. Friday's action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. while Sunday's Senior Day action will begin at noon.
In their road finale, the 'Cats dropped a 7-0 match to No. 27 Illinois last weekend in Urbana. They battled to four third sets in singles action, but couldn't close it out on any court. With that match in, Northwestern heads into their final weekend of play at 2-5 in Big Ten play and 8-16 overall, putting them tied at seventh in the conference standings.
This weekend will provide the Wildcats with a chance to play teams directly above them in the standings, beginning with current six-seed Indiana on Friday. The Hoosiers (15-9, 3-4 B1G) went 1-1 last weekend, falling 5-2 to Nebraska before defeating Wisconsin 5-2. They enter the weekend with one ranked singles player in No. 90 Sam Landau and one ranked doubles duo in No. 64 Michael Andre and Ilya Tiraspolsky.
Following that, the 'Cats will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday with a match against the Purdue Boilermakers (7-13, 2-5 B1G). Purdue also split matches against Wisconsin and Nebraska last weekend; they defeated the Badgers 4-2 and lost to the Huskers 5-2. Like Northwestern, the Boilermakers' two conference victories have come against Penn State and Wisconsin, giving them a nearly identical Big Ten season so far.
After closing out the regular season, the Wildcats will gear up for the Big Ten Tournament, which will be hosted on their home turf in Evanston. The matches will begin on Thursday with the eight through ten seeds, then progress until the Championship match on Sunday afternoon.
