EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 69 Northwestern completed their 2024 regular season with a victory on Sunday, defeating the Purdue Boilermakers 5-2 at Vandy Christie Tennis Center. It was part of a weekend split for the 'Cats, who fell 4-1 to No. 70 Indiana on Friday.
The split positioned Northwestern (9-17, 3-6 B1G) seventh in the Big Ten at the conclusion of the regular season.
To open their weekend, the 'Cats hosted Indiana (16-10, 4-5 B1G) at Combe Tennis Center Friday evening. The Hoosiers got out to the first advantage, claiming the doubles point with victories at #1 and #3 doubles.
The Wildcats took the first singles victory of the day on the #4 court, tying the match up at one apiece. Felix Nordby completed a dominant 6-1, 6-1 match to provide Northwestern their first point of the day. From there, however, Indiana was back in control. The Hoosiers won back-to-back 6-2, 6-2 victories on the #2 and #5 courts, then Jagger Saylor sealed the 4-1 victory with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Saiprakash Goli at #3.
Sunday's match began on a better note for Northwestern, who won the doubles point against Purdue (12-9, 5-6 B1G). The No. 50 duo of Felix Nordby and Gleb Blekher won a 6-1 match ahead of Jackson Caldwell and Nick Herdoiza, who won their first match of the season as a pairing, 6-4.
Herdoiza continued a successful day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #6 singles as well, putting the 'Cats up 2-0 on the Boilermakers. His victory was followed by a point for Purdue from #2 singles, but Presley Thieneman struck back with a tiebreak win at #1, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to put the 'Cats on the brink. Max Bengtsson sealed up the team win at #5 singles, where he won his second-straight match by a final score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. After clinching, Nordby added one more point for the 'Cats, completing his weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Purdue would claim the final point in super tiebreak fashion, but the 'Cats completed their regular season with a 5-2 victory.
Next up for the team will be the Big Ten Tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Evanston. As the seven seed, the 'Cats will take on ten-seed Wisconsin in the first round. That match is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and will be played on campus and streamed on B1G+.
