Northwestern Set to Host Minnesota on Senior Night

3/8/2024 3:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern (20-10, 11-8 B1G) hosts Minnesota at 8 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 9, in the regular season finale and will honor its senior class of Boo Buie, Ryan Langborg, Ty Berry, Matthew Nicholson and Blake Preston before the game as part of its Senior Night festivities. Dave Revsine (play-by-play), Brian Butch (analyst), and Andy Katz (sideline) will have the call on BTN, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will have the radio call on ESPN 1000 WMVP.

Over the last two seasons, the Wildcats have won 23 Big Ten games, their most in consecutive seasons in school history, surpassing 20 wins over the 1930-31 and 1931-32 seasons. NU has tallied 10-plus league wins in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history and secured a .500 or better conference record for the fourth time in the last 56 years. Northwestern is one win away from tying the school single-season record of 12 conference wins, which was set last year.

NU's five NET Quad 1 wins (Dayton, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, at Maryland) rank third-most in the Big Ten. Northwestern's 10-9 mark in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games is the 19th-best mark nationally.

The Wildcats have been one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the ball this year, leading the Big Ten and ranking seventh in the country, averaging just 9.0 turnovers per game.

Northwestern ranks second in the Big Ten and eighth nationally in the 3-point percentage (39.1%, 248-for-634). NU's 39.1% mark is its highest in a season since the 1990-91 team shot 43.4% (109-for-251) from downtown, which ranks second in program history.

Buie leads all Wildcats from beyond the arc, converting on 75 three-pointers after making 64 all of last season. He improved his three-point percentage from 31.8% (64-for-201) in 2022-23 to 43.1% (75-for-174) this season, which ranks ninth nationally and second in the Big Ten. The graduate student is one of just six high-major players in the last 25 seasons to post career numbers of 2,000 points, 600 assists and 250 made 3-pointers.

Brooks Barnhizer is averaging 14.3 points per game (second on the team, 18th in the Big Ten), a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game (eighth in the Big Ten) and a team-high 1.8 steals per game (fourth in the Big Ten). Barnhizer's eight double-doubles this season are the most in a campaign by a Wildcat since Dererk Pardon had eight in 2018-19 and the most by a guard since Drew Crawford in 2013-14.

Northwestern dropped a rock fight at Michigan State 53-49 in its last game on Wednesday (March 6) night. Buie led the team with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Nick Martinelli (12 points) and Brooks Barnhizer (11 points). The Wildcats held the Spartans to an 11.8% (2-17) mark from 3-point range, limiting its opponent to below 12% for the second time in the last three games. Michigan State recorded season lows in points, field goals made (19) and field goal percentage (31.7%).

Minnesota (18-12, 9-10 B1G) leads the all-time series against Northwestern, 110-74. The Golden Gophers won this season's earlier meeting in Minneapolis, 75-66 in overtime on Feb. 3. Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins is 9-9 in his career against Minnesota.

Minnesota (18-12, 9-10 Big Ten) is led offensively by Dawson Garcia, who averages 17.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Elijah Hawkins leads the Big Ten with 7.4 assists per game.

Northwestern will travel to Minnesota for the Big Ten Tournament at Target Center in Minneapolis. Game information is to be determined. Stay tuned to @NUMensBball on Twitter and Instagram and nusports.com for more information.
