Wildcats Split Saturday Twinbill with UTSA

Game One
UTSA drew first blood in the first inning and never trailed en route to a 12-2 victory. The Roadrunners added three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh. Northwestern got on the board with two runs in the eighth when Zach Selfon drew a bases-loaded walk. Trent Liolios plated Jackson Freeman with a sacrifice fly to trim the Roadrunner lead to 8-2. UTSA added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 12-2 victory.
Nolan Morr (1-3) was handed the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits, walking one, and fanning two in 4.0 innings of work.
Robert Orloski (2-2) earned the win, tossing five innings in relief, surrendering four hits and one run while walking two and striking out two batters.
Game Two
UTSA carried its strong offensive showing from game one into the early stages of game two, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly and adding another on a steal of home.
Northwestern's offense woke up in the third inning, exploding for six runs on five hits. Bennett Markinson got the Wildcats on the board with a sacrifice fly, bringing Vince Bianchina home. Jackson Freeman tied the game with an RBI single, driving in Owen McElfatrick. NU took the lead on a passed ball, scoring Freeman. Lorenzo Rios extended the lead on an error by the Roadrunner first baseman. Zach Selfon added two more, bringing in Trent Liolios and Preston Knott to give NU a 6-2 advantage.
UTSA got two back in the bottom half of the third by way of an inside-the-park home run. NU responded with another RBI single from Freeman, extending the Wildcat lead to 7-4. Preston Knott doubled home Freeman in the top of the sixth, giving NU an 8-4 edge. Northwestern added two more home runs in the seventh, one on a solo shot from Griffin Arnone and another from a sacrifice fly from Markinson.
Luke Benneche (1-1) earned the win, throwing 5.1 shutout innings in relief of Kyle Potthoff. Benneche allowed four hits and struck out one, and did not issue a walk.
Conor Myles (0-1) was credited with the loss, surrendering six hits and five runs, walking two in 1.0 inning of action.

- Jackson Freeman went 5-for-7 on the day, drawing two walks, driving in a pair, and scoring two runs.
- Freeman has reached base safely in his first 13 games.
- Colin Dowdle tossed a scoreless ninth inning in game one in his second career appearance.
- Matt McClure struck out a pair and allowed three hits in two innings of relief in game one.
Sunday's game is set to be the rubber match in the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
