'Cats Drop Series Finale at UTSA

EVANSTON, Ill. – After a four-hour rain delay, Northwestern (7-9) fell in a 2-0 pitcher's duel to UTSA (10-10) in the series finale at Roadrunner Field on Sunday.

UTSA broke through to take the lead after five scoreless innings, scoring on a Andrew Stucky double, plating Diego Diaz to take a 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners doubled the lead on a Matt King double that plated Mason Lytle.

Amar Tsengeg started the game on the rubber for the Wildcats, allowing two hits and fanning a pair in two scoreless innings before Garrett Shearer took over. Shearer (1-2) was credited with the loss for the Wildcats in a solid outing. The O'Fallon, Ill. native surrendered two runs on six hits, striking out six in 4.2 innings pitched. Drew Dickson allowed one hit and struck out one in 1.1 scoreless innings. 

Ulises Quiroga (1-0) earned the win for UTSA, tossing six shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Daniel Garza earned the save for the Roadrunners, closing out the Wildcats in three innings of work, striking out one, walking two, and allowing two hits.

Bennett Markinson (2-for-4) recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season, singling in the first and fourth innings.

Northwestern continues its Texas road swing with a two-game midweek series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, March 19 and Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
