Chumbley, Bates place eighth at respective weight classes
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (March 10, 2024) – Trevor Chumbley and Evan Bates each took home eighth-place finishes, while Maxx Mayfield picked up a thrilling win to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships as Northwestern wrestling wrapped up action at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships inside XFINITY Center in College Park, Md. this afternoon.
Chumbley picked up his second straight Big Ten podium finish, placing eighth at 157 pounds. The St. Charles, Ill. product tallied wins over eighth-seeded Joey Blaze (Purdue), 5-2, and 10th-seeded Isaac Wilcox (Ohio State), 5-1. Chumbley's victory over his Buckeye counterpart punched his ticket for a second trip to the NCAA Championships.
Bates came away with a pair of wins on the weekend at 197 pounds, none more impressive than a victory by fall (1:51) over ninth-seeded Ben Vanadia (Purdue) in Saturday's opening round. The Chesterton, Ind. native went on to clinch his spot on the podium, the first of his career, with an 8-3 decision against 10th-seeded Gabe Sollars (Indiana).
After dropping into the 11th-place bracket at 165 pounds, Maxx Mayfield came away with a pair of wins, capped off by a thrilling 5-3 win over Caleb Fish (Michigan State) that saw Mayfield muscle his way to the bout's deciding takedown just before time expired in the third period. By virtue of his finish, Mayfield will join Chumbley as an automatic qualifier for the national meet.
Northwestern will return to action at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, set for March 21-23 inside T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
