Northwestern begins competition in Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday morning

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 20, 2024) – Northwestern wrestling continues postseason action this week as a trio of Wildcats head to Kansas City, Mo. for the 2024 NCAA Championships.

The University of Missouri will host this year's edition of the national meet inside the T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City.  Action opens on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Session I, with Session II to follow at 6 p.m.  Friday's slate begins at 11 a.m. with Session III, while Session IV features semifinal and blood round bouts later in the evening at 7 p.m.  The medal round highlights Session V on Saturday at 10 a.m. before the National Finals take center stage in Session VI at 6 p.m.

Trevor Chumbley (157 pounds), Maxx Mayfield (165 pounds), and Evan Bates (197 pounds) are slated to represent Northwestern this week.  Chumbley and Mayfield are each making their second consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships, while Bates is set to debut at the national meet.

Both Chumbley and Bates are coming off respective eighth place finishes at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships.  Chumbley, who will clash with Big Ten rival Peyton Robb (Nebraska) in Thursday's opening round, has piled up eight bonus-point wins in 2023-24, while Bates picked up wins in three of his final four regular season outings before tallying two additional victories at the league meet.

Mayfield, who, like Chumbley, will open action against Big Ten opposition in Mitchell Mesenbrink (Penn State), came away with three wins at the Big Ten Championships, highlighted by a 5-3 decision over Caleb Fish (Michigan State) to ultimately secure his spot in Kansas City.

HOW TO WATCH
The ESPN family of networks will provide comprehensive coverage of all three days of competition in Kansas City.  ESPNU will be the broadcast home of Sessions I, III, and V, while action shifts to ESPN for Sessions II, IV, and VI.  Action from individual mats can be accessed through ESPN+.
