Mayfield Scores Upset Win As ‘Cats Wrap Up NCAA Championships

Redshirt junior upended No. 16 seed at 165 pounds
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (March 22, 2024) – Maxx Mayfield came away with his second upset win in as many days as Northwestern wrestling wrapped up its stay at the NCAA Championships this afternoon inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
After knocking off No. 18 Connor Brady (Virginia Tech) on Thursday evening, Mayfield squared off with No. 16 Will Miller (Appalachian State) in the second round of consolation bouts at 165 pounds. After jumping out to a 6-2 lead following the first period, the Lincoln, Neb. native found himself staring at a 7-6 deficit entering the third period. With just over a minute remaining, Mayfield scored the bout's deciding takedown, taking a 9-7 lead on the way to a 9-8 decision victory.
