Graduate student posts new 54-hole career low, finishes as part of tie for 11th
LA QUINTA, Calif. (February 22, 2024) – James Imai put together the top 54-hole effort of his collegiate career, leading the Northwestern University men's golf team earlier in the week at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.
The Wildcats posted a 54-hole team score of 858 (290-280-288) to place 17th in the team race. Texas Tech (271-273-275=819) surged to the team title, while Cecil Belisle of Kansas carded a 13-under-par 200 (67-66-67) to finish atop the individual leaderboard.
Imai dazzled during his stay at par-71, 7,129-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. After opening play with back-to-back one-under-par 70s, the Brookline, Mass. product piled up six birdies as part of a four-under-par 67, the top round of the event by a Wildcat, during Wednesday's final round, ascending into a tie for 11th place. Imai's showing this week bests his previous 54-hole career low of 209, a mark achieved last season at both the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational and the Cal Poly Invitational.
Niall Shiels-Donegan enjoyed the top 54-hole showing of his young career en route to earning a share of 35th with a one-under-par 212 (73-69-70). Shiels-Donegan, who opened play with a two-over-par 73, matched his 18-hole season low in second-round action, handing in a two-under-par 69 that featured four birdies. He was back in red numbers again in the final round, firing a one-under-par 70. Daniel Svärd matched Shiels-Donegan's second-round effort, turning in a two-under-par 69 on the way to sharing 62nd with a three-over par 216 (71-69-76).
Chris Zhang (T-111th; 80-72-75=227) and Cameron Adam (T-111th; 76-74-77=227) joined both Shiels-Donegan and Svärd in posting their top individual rounds during Tuesday's second round. Zhang carded a one-over-par 72, while Adam checked in with a three-over-par 74.
Three Wildcats also competed as part The Prestige's individual event, held at The Golf Club at Terra Lago (par 72; 7,039 yards) in nearby Indio, Calif. Akshay Anand made a push for the top spot on the leaderboard, using a career-low five-under-par 67 in the final round to finish tied for second with a 54-hole career-best six-under-par 210 (69-74-67). The pairing of Archie Finnie (70-75-69=214) and Jeremy Chen (71-72-71=214) closed play tied for sixth, each tallying two-under-par 214s. Finnie shot his fourth round of the year in the 60s on Wednesday, carding a three-under-par 69. Chen came in at or under-par across all three rounds, bookending play with one-under-par 71s.
