EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's basketball, winners of three of its last four games, returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena to host crosstown foe DePaul at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 21. The game will air on BTN with Jason Ross Jr. (play-by-play) and Bruce Weber (analyst) on the call, and ESPN 1000 WMVP with the Voice of the 'Cats Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).
Last time out, the Wildcats (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated Georgia Tech 71-60 in wire-to-wire fashion on Sunday (Dec. 15) at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Senior Brooks Barnhizer secured his fourth consecutive double-double by posting 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. He became the third Big Ten player since 2005-06 to post these numbers in a game and the first to do so since Iowa's Keegan Murray in 2021. He became the first Northwestern player to have four consecutive double-doubles since at least 2000 and the first Big Ten player to do so this season.
Junior Nick Martinelli and graduate student Jalen Leach also contributed 16 points each, as Northwestern has now had at least three players score 15 points in three consecutive games for the first time since at least 2005-06. Graduate student Ty Berry tallied 11 points, knocking down his 200th career 3-pointer in the process.
The Wildcats forced the Yellow Jackets into a season-high 16 turnovers, while their 60 points was their second lowest output of the season. Northwestern converted 9-of-22 (40.9%) 3-point
attempts, tying its most made threes in a game this season. The 'Cats held a 31-26 lead at halftime, marking the fifth time in the last six games they have held the opposition to under 30 points in the opening half.
Barnhizer's five double-doubles this season are the most by a high-major conference guard. He and Martinelli are the only pair of teammates in the country averaging 19+ points per game. Both are averaging 19+ points and 6+ rebounds per game, something that only two other high-major players are doing in the nation.
Martinelli has reached 20+ points in a game six times this season, the most by a Northwestern forward since Vic Law had seven such games in 2018-19. A Wildcat has not averaged 20+ points per game since John Shurna (20.0) in 2011-12. Martinelli, Barnhizer and Leach are the third trio of Northwestern players to average 14+ points per game in a single season, and the first to do so since the 1973-74 season. Only 17 Division I teams have three players averaging 14+ points per game this season.
As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.3 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten and ranks 11th fewest nationally. Northwestern is allowing an average of 64.2 points per game, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 32nd nationally
Berry enters the game needing 23 points to reach 1,000 for his career and become the 41st player in school history to reach the benchmark. Barnhizer is just one double-double short of tying Dererk Pardon (2015-19) for the second most double-doubles by a Wildcat since 2000.
Northwestern trails the all-time series against the Blue Demons (8-3, 0-2 Big East), 21-16, but the Wildcats have won two straight and six of the last seven meetings. Northwestern has won seven of the last eight meetings played in Evanston, beginning with a 72-59 triumph on Dec. 6, 1997. Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins is 6-2 in his career against the Blue Demons.
DePaul enters the contest after an 89-61 setback to conference opponent St. John's on the road. Head coach Chris Holtmann is in his first year coaching DePaul after seven seasons at Ohio State. This year's contest between the Wildcats and Blue Demons mark the first-ever regular season meeting with each team recording eight or more wins and the first meeting with each recording eight or more wins since a 1999 matchup in the NIT.
Northwestern will play its last non-conference regular season game at 12:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Dec. 29 when it hosts Northeastern. The contest will air on Peacock and WGN Radio 720.
