EAST LANSING, Mich. - Eight Wildcats finished among the top six in their weight classes on Saturday as Northwestern wrestling opened their 2024-25 season at the Michigan State Open. Massey Odiotti, Eddie Enright and Evan Bates all secured runner-up finishes, headlining the group of 16 Northwestern athletes who competed in East Lansing.

In the freshman/sophomore division, Odiotti got off to a dominant start at 133 after receiving a first-round bye. In his round two bout, he dispatched of Kolten Barker (Ohio) by technical fall, 17-2, to advance on. From there, he defeated Findlay's Nate Knowlton by 7-5 decision and Michigan's Teddy Flores by 18-3 technical fall. Odiotti ultimately fell by a narrow margin in the first place match, dropping a 4-3 decision to JJ McComas (Oklahoma State) to finish as runner-up.

Enright's day also began with a bye, after which he made quick work of his first two opponents with two pins in the second round and quarterfinal. It took just 47 seconds for Enright to pin Joshua Henderson (Ohio), then he took care of Purdue's Delaney Ruhlman in 2:23 to advance to the semifinal. From there, he won over Hunter Andel (Kent State) by major decision before coming just short in the final, losing by 6-4 decision to finish as runner-up at 165 in the freshman/sophomore division.

At 197 in the open division, Bates pinned both opponents en route to his finals appearance. First, he won by fall over Evan Grazzini (Bellarmine ) in 1:47, then he one-upped himself with another win by fall in just 0:37, this one over Kael Wisler (Michigan State). Cody Merrill (Oklahoma State) eventually won by 4-2 decision over Bates in the final, giving Bates the third 'Cats' runner-up finish.

Elsewhere, Dedrick Navarro and Gunnar Myers both finished third at 125 and 165 respectively in the freshman/sophomore division. Navarro racked up four tech falls along the way, while Myers got it done with a tech fall and a pin. Maxx Mayfield also finished third in the open division at 165, with his sole loss coming at the hands of InterMat's No. 27 ranked wrestler at 165 in Ohio State's Bryce Hepner.

Ty Wilson finished fifth in the freshman/sophomore division at 157, while Joseph Martin finished fourth at 174 and Jon Halvorsen finished sixth at 184, both in the open division, to round out the 'Cats' podium finishes.
