EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern wrestling opened dual season in dominant fashion Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, taking down the NIU Huskies (0-1) by a final score of 29-8 to improve to 1-0 on the season. The 'Cats won eight of ten bouts en route to the team victory, led by Dedrick Navarro's upset of No. 27 Blake West at 125 lbs.
Following a scoreless first period, West jumped out to the match's first lead with an escape and a takedown in the second. A stalling warning early in the third got Navarro on the board, and from there, he was able to get a takedown of his own with a minute to go. West escaped shortly after, but a final effort from Navarro led to a scramble, in which he got the last-second trip to win the match in come-from-behind fashion.
After NIU's Markel Baker got the better of Massey Odiotti at 133 lbs, the 'Cats ran off seven straight wins through the middle of the order. No. 10 Chris Cannon won a 9-3 decision at 141 lbs in his return to Welsh-Ryan Arena. No. 12 Trevor Chumbley (157 lbs) and No. 16 Maxx Mayfield (165 lbs.) also posted victories by decision, while Joseph Martin picked up the first dual meet win of his career at 174 lbs.
Sam Cartella, ranked No. 20 entering Saturday's action, shone in his 2024 debut. Facing off against NIU's Collin Arch, Cartella led from start to finish in a 15-0 technical fall. He collected a takedown in each of the three periods and added an escape, four near-fall points and the riding time point to cruise to victory at 149 lbs.
Jon Halvorsen used a last-second takedown of Spencer Steiner at 184 lbs to secure a major decision, 12-2, in his first action of the year. Afterwards, No. 25 Evan Bates racked up five takedowns on his way to a 19-4 technical fall over Spencer Moobery at 197 lbs.
The 'Cats will continue their homestand next weekend, when they host Little Rock at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The two squads are set to match up at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, Nov. 24.
