Wildcats Fall to Rutgers 3-1

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Rylen Reid racked up a career-high 19 kills and Sophia Summers collected nine kills with a .692 hitting percentage, but the Northwestern volleyball team fell in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 23-25) to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Saturday on Senior Night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The loss dropped Northwestern's record to 5-21 overall and 3-15 in Big Ten play.

The Wildcats offense was paced by Reid, who accumulated her 19 kills on a hitting percentage of .273, and by Buse Hazan, who had 15 kills while hitting .265. Defensively, the 'Cats had two players reach double figures in digs as Alexa Rousseau had 18 and Drew Wright had 11.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Wildcats persevered in a back-and-forth first set to win 25-23 in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. The Wildcats opening set win came in a stanza where 17 of their 25 points came via the kill.

SET 2 | Northwestern then dropped the second set 25-17, evening things at a set each. The Wildcats fell behind on the first point and never took the lead.

SET 3 | Northwestern then lost their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. The Wildcats fell in the third set 25-23. Rutgers grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was tied up five times before the Scarlet Knights took over the lead

SET 4 | Northwestern lost set four and the match, falling 25-23. The Wildcats rallied from a nine-point deficit at 19-10, but it wasn't enough as Rutgers hung on to win the set.

Game Notes

» Summers' nine kills tied her career high.
» Lauren Carter had her second multi-ace game of the season.
» Reid led the attack for the second time in the 'Cats' last three matches.
» Rousseau logged her 12th double-double of the season with 30 assists and a season-high 18 digs.

Next Up

The 'Cats will close out their season next week at Michigan State and Michigan. They'll face the Spartans in East Lansing on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT before wrapping up at Michigan in Ann Arbor on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
