EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis took Louisville to the wire, but dropped a close 4-3 match in their home opener Sunday at Combe Tennis Center.
Greyson Casey and Presley Thieneman won a 6-3 match in their first action as a duo, but Louisville picked up the other two matches and the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead at the break.
Casey picked up the first singles victory of his career a little later at the #5 position, besting Piet Steveker 6-4, 6-4 to give the 'Cats their first point of the day. Saiprakash Goli followed that up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #3 singles to even the match up at two points apiece.
With the score knotted up, Chad Miller gave Northwestern their first lead of the day at #6 singles, going 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 for his first victory as a Wildcat.
Though Felix Nordby (#4) and Presley Thieneman (#2) both battled through at least one tiebreak apiece, they ultimately fell to their opponents, giving Louisville the narrow 4-3 victory.
After dropping their first three, the 'Cats will try to bounce back next weekend at the ITA Kickoff. They'll take on Ole Miss on Saturday at noon, then either Harvard or UCLA on Sunday, with time to be determined.
