Field Hockey to Visit Ohio State, Host Princeton

9/21/2023 7:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 3 Northwestern field hockey will split their weekend between Columbus and Evanston as they visit No. 12 Ohio State and then host Princeton at Lakeside Field. Friday's game against the Buckeyes will begin at 2:00 p.m. CT while Sunday's action is set to start at noon.

Storylines
  • Northwestern has won seven straight and will take a 7-1 record into the weekend. Within the win streak, five of the games have been shutouts and four have been won by a margin or two goals or more. The 'Cats had two winning streaks of seven games or longer last season - one seven-game streak (10/14-11/3) and one eight-game streak (8/28-9/18).
  • The 'Cats have taken cues from their captains so far, including graduate student Peyton Halsey. The midfielder leads the team in both goals (6) and points (14) after scoring two of Northwestern's five goals last Friday against Indiana.
  • First year Olivia Bent-Cole continued to contribute last weekend, adding a third goal to her season total with a score against Indiana on Friday. With three assists in the books as well, she is tied with Maja Zivojnovic for second on the roster with nine points this year.
  • Lane Herbert had a huge hand in the 'Cats' offense last weekend. The junior accounted for three of Northwestern's eight goals, including two of three on Sunday. With four goals on the season now, she has tied her career high, originally set in 2022.
  • Ohio State will be the fifth ranked team the 'Cats have faced this season and the second top-15 team on the schedule. Northwestern is 3-1 against those teams, with their only loss coming at the hands of then-No. 9 Louisville.
  • After opening the season at No. 2 in the NFHCA Division I poll, the 'Cats have now been ranked third for a third consecutive week behind Iowa (8-0) and North Carolina (5-1).
Matchup Information
  • The 'Cats are 28-19-1 against Ohio State all-time, including a 6-6-1 mark in Columbus. This will be their second straight season with a visit to the Buckeyes after the 'Cats came away with a 2-1 victory in overtime last October.
  • Sunday's game will be the third meeting between Princeton and Northwestern and the first ever at Lakeside Field. The 'Cats are 1-1 against the Tigers with a 2-1 overtime win last season and a 5-1 loss in the only other meeting, which occurred in 1981.
