Five Things to Know
- Northwestern secured its first victory of the season last weekend in the home opener at Ryan Field, with a 38-7 romp over UTEP. The victory pushed the Wildcats back to .500 (1-1) on the season, and marked interim head coach David Braun's first-ever victory as a head coach. Braun is the first Northwestern head coach to win their home debut since John Pont's Wildcats defeated Michigan State 14-10 on Sept. 15, 1973.

— Northwestern Football (@NUFBFamily) September 10, 2023 - Five different Wildcats found the end zone as the team posted an impressive day on the ground, highlighted by a team-high 90 rushing yards from Cam Porter. Northwestern's 391 yards of total offense is the program's most since Sept. 20, 2022 against Duke. Ben Bryant and Jack Lausch also became the first pair of 'Cats quarterbacks to each record a rushing touchdown since Trevor Siemian and Matt Alviti in NU's win over Notre Dame on Nov. 15, 2014.
- The Wildcats' 38 unanswered points in the home opener marked the program's most unanswered points since scoring 43-straight in the 2020 season opener against Maryland. Northwestern's five touchdowns marked the first five-touchdown game since the Citrus Bowl victory over Auburn on Jan. 1, 2021.

'Cats. UTEP. Home Opener ??. pic.twitter.com/1k8nGSd1ET - Northwestern's defense carried over its second-half momentum from the Rutgers contest into the home opener against UTEP. After surrendering a score on the Miners' opening drive, the 'Cats locked the visitors down, holding UTEP without a point over the final three quarters. Bryce Gallagher, who finished the day with seven tackles, and Xander Mueller became the first pair of Northwestern linebackers to record interceptions in the same game since Chi Chi Ariguzo and Collin Ellis did so against Nebraska on Nov. 2, 2013. As a team, Northwestern recorded three interceptions.
- Saturday's clash marks the 23rd meeting between Duke and Northwestern, with the Blue Devils leading the all-time series 12-10. Duke has won the last four meetings, including last year's 31-23 triumph at Ryan Field. Northwestern is in search of its 12th all-time win against an AP ranked non-conference (regular season) opponent, and first since defeating No. 21 Stanford 16-6 in 2015.
