Northwestern Falls Just Short in Loss to Milwaukee

5/9/2023 10:42:00 PM | Baseball

FRANKLIN, Wis. -- Milwaukee's one-run sixth proved to be the difference in the ballgame, as the Northwestern Wildcats lost a tough one to the Panthers by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday at Franklin Field.

Senior Jack Sauser (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Northwestern (8-35) and took the loss. Junior Matt McClure got back in the swing of things with a midweek start, tossing two perfect innings with one strikeout.

At the plate, the Wildcats were led by senior Griffin Arnone, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Alex Calarco furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Junior Tony Livermore came across to score the lone run of the inning for Northwestern on a wild pitch.

The Panthers used an RBI single to tie the game up at one in the fifth inning, then gained their first lead of the ballgame with one more run in the next frame. Milwaukee added some insurance in the eighth with an inside-the-park home run, making it a 3-1 game.

Northwestern picked up one more run on Arnone's leadoff home run in the ninth, but they couldn't complete the comeback, and the ballgame ended 3-2 in favor of the Panthers.

GAME NOTES
» Arnone's home run was his eighth of the season, the most by a Wildcat. It was his first long ball since April 11.
» The Wildcats collected six straight outs via the strikeouts in the second and third innings. Both Ethan Sund and Ryan Keenan pitched one inning and struck out three batters.
» Northwestern pitchers limited Milwaukee to just 2-for-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Northwestern pitchers faced 33 Milwaukee hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out eight.
» Sophomore Keagon Kaufmann led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing three shutout innings to earn the win.
