'Cats Comeback Falls Short Against UIC

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Offense was the headline on Tuesday night at Miller Park as Northwestern and UIC combined for 44 runs and the 'Cats fell to the Flames by a final score of 24-20.
Ethan Sund got the ball to start for the Wildcats and was followed by Grant Comstock (0-3), who came out of the bullpen for Northwestern (5-22) and took the loss.
Sophomore Alex Calarco had a big night in the loss, hitting a grand slam en route to five RBIs for the Wildcats. Alex Roessner put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, a walk and three RBI. Freshman Trent Liolios also contributed for the 'Cats, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a home run and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats got on the board immediately when Griffin Arnone hit a solo home run out of the leadoff spot to put them up 1-0. The offense kept clicking in the frame and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of senior Kevin Ferrer.
The next few frames belonged to the Flames, who scored 22 runs during the second and third innings. The 'Cats got back on the board in the fourth, using Calarco's grand slam to narrow the lead to 22-11.
The teams traded blows through the middle innings before Northwestern kicked their offense into high gear late in the game. A homer each from Roessner and Liolios brought in six runs in the eighth, then the 'Cats pushed two more across in the ninth. They couldn't complete the comeback, however, and the Flames took home the victory by a final score of 24-20.
