Northwestern Drops Opener 8-3 to Nebraska

4/14/2023 6:43:00 PM | Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Northwestern Wildcats started hot but couldn't keep up with Nebraska as they dropped the opener to the Cornhuskers by final score of 8-3.

Sam Garewal (0-3) came out of the bullpen for Northwestern (5-23, 3-4 B1G) and took the loss. Junior Matt McClure put in another solid start for the Wildcats, throwing four innings and giving up one run on just one hit.

Cooper Foard led the offensive for the 'Cats, going yard with his first home run of the year. Sophomore Alex Roessner put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Foard put Northwestern on the board with a one-out solo home run off junior Emmett Olson.

McClure held the Huskers scorless while the Wildcats offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Northwestern picked up two runs when a single from Roessner scored senior Evan Minarovic and sophomore Alex Calarco, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

The 'Cats were unable to hold the lead, however, as Nebraska scored eight times over the remaining five innings to grab the 8-3 win.
