Northwestern Tallies Six Runs in Loss to UIC

3/7/2023 7:36:00 PM | Baseball

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Despite racking up five extra-base hits, the offensive output was not enough for Northwestern on Tuesday. The Wildcats put up six runs, but could not hold the UIC Flames at bay, and were defeated 10-6.

Sophomore Grant Comstock (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (0-10).

Griffin Arnone led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Bennett Markinson put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Alex Calarco also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Northwestern with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Flames got off to a hot start, using a combination of walks, hits and productive outs to rack up three first-inning runs. The Wildcats began their comeback in the second inning, however. Calarco came across to score the lone run of the inning for Northwestern and get them on the board in that frame.

The Wildcats closed the gap further in the third. Junior Tony Livermore came across to score for Northwestern on an RBI groundout, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Flames.

UIC built their lead to 5-2, but Northwestern kept pace in the fourth. A three-run homer from Arnone, his second of the year, scored Trent Liolios and Markinson to even the score up at five apiece.

The Flames busted up the tie in the sixth, scoring four runs in the frame to retake the lead. They added one more on with a solo home run in the seventh, giving them a 10-5 advantage. Northwestern got back on the scoreboard in the eighth with another RBI groundout, but their rally was capped at one. The Wildcats were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame, and the Flames won by a final score of 10-6.
