'Cats Rout DePaul, 20-1, in Crosstown Showdown

3/28/2023 7:48:00 PM | Softball

CHICAGO, Ill. – Danielle Williams had everything working on Tuesday, striking out 10 of 16 batters faced while the Northwestern offense exploded for a season-high 20 runs in a run-rule victory over DePaul on Tuesday.

In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Williams (5-1) tossed 4.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit and walking one for Northwestern. Williams retired the first 12 batters she faced and carried a perfect game into the final fifth frame.

At the plate, the Wildcats were led by Angela Zedak, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double, two home runs and a career-high seven RBI. Lauren Sciborski compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Nikki Cuchran also helped out for Northwestern, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.

Northwestern extends its winning streak to a season-long eight-straight wins. The Wildcats return to action this weekend when they travel to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes in a three-game series from March 31-April 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats got the scoring started early, putting six runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats' offense started clicking with two outs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Sciborski and a two-run double from Zedak amidst seven-consecutive batters reaching base.

The Wildcats then held the Blue Demons scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Northwestern scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Zedak, scoring Cuchran and Ayana Lindsey, which brought the score to 9-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

Northwestern held DePaul scoreless before building its lead to 15-0 the following inning. The Wildcats bats stayed red hot in the third, scoring six runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Zedak which marked the first multi-home run game of her career.

Northwestern kept the Blue Demons without a run before the Wildcat offense went back to work the next inning. The Wildcats scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by two more RBI off the bat of Sciborski and a two-run single from junior Hannah Cady, bringing the score to 20-0 in favor of Northwestern. DePaul broke up Williams' no-hit bid with one out in the fifth inning and ultimately put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over.

GAME NOTES

» This marks the third time the Wildcats have scored 20+ runs in a single game, having done so last season vs. UIC on April 26 (21) and when the 'Cats scored a single-game program record 22 runs vs. Virginia on February 12, 2016.
