Audige leads 'Cats with 16 points

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A trio of Wildcats scored in double figures as No. 21 Northwestern dropped a 75-59 decision to Maryland on Sunday afternoon inside the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.

Chase Audige led the Wildcats (20-9, 11-7 B1G) with 16 points in the defeat.  He was joined in double figures by Brooks Barnhizer (11 points) and Matthew Nicholson (10 points).

How It Happened
A Nicholson flush just over 90 seconds in gave Northwestern its first advantage of the afternoon, 4-2, as part of a back and forth start that saw the two teams trade the lead.  Audige dialed in from outside to put the 'Cats back in front, 16-14, with 12:26 to play in the first half.  Three straight Ty Berry makes from the free throw line stretched the gap to 23-18 just before the midway point of the opening stanza.

After seeing Maryland edge in front, 35-32, Northwestern rattled off five unanswered points, the last three of which came on a Boo Buie trey that staked the Wildcats to a 37-35 edge at the 2:42 mark.  A Jahmir Young three as time expired capped off a tightly contested opening 20 minutes, sending the Terrapins into halftime with a slim 41-39 lead.

Nicholson pulled the 'Cats level just 16 seconds after the intermission, scoring inside to knot the game up at 41-41.  Maryland countered with a 9-2 run, with a Donta Scott bucket putting the hosts up seven, 50-43, with four minutes gone.  Berry drilled a three to get Northwestern back within four, 50-46, just 15 seconds after as the Wildcats looked to hang tough.

A Buie split at the charity stripe trimmed Maryland's lead to 55-49 with 12:40 to play in regulation, but that proved to be as close as Northwestern would get for the rest of the afternoon, as Maryland pushed its lead in double digits and coasted to the final horn.

Game Notes

» Audige paced the 'Cats with 16 points, his tenth game in double figures across his last 12 appearances.
» Barnhizer cracked the 10-point mark for a third straight game, chipping in 11 points.
» Nicholson's 10 points saw him fall just three points shy of his top scoring output of 2022-23.
» Buie matched a season high with eight assists in addition to four points.
» Berry ripped down a season-best six rebounds, his 15th game this season with at least five rebounds.

Northwestern closes out the home portion of its 2022-23 schedule on Wednesday, March 1 at 8 p.m. when it welcomes Penn State to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a matchup that will be televised on Big Ten Network.
