Northwestern Takes Down Minnesota 76-62

EVANSTON, ILL. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team took down Minnesota 76-62 to claim their second conference win of the season at home Saturday.
The Wildcats (9-18, 2-14) had two players score in double figures, led by Caileigh Walsh, who had 22 points and two steals. Paige Mott added 15 points and three steals and Hailey Weaver added seven points and six steals.
Northwestern did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 19 assists while turning the ball over only eight times. Individually, Jasmine McWilliams dished out the most for the Wildcats with five assists.
On the other end of the floor, Northwestern forced 25 Minnesota turnovers in Saturday's game. Weaver's six steals led the way for Northwestern.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-13, Northwestern went on a 5-0 run with 2:45 left in the first quarter to take an 18-17 lead. The Wildcats then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 22-19 advantage. Northwestern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 22 points close to the basket.
Minnesota rallied to take a 25-24 lead in the second before Northwestern went on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:21 mark, highlighted by a bucket from Mott, to reclaim the lead, 29-25 lead. The Golden Gophers cut into that lead, but the Wildcats still enjoyed a 35-33 advantage heading into halftime.
Northwestern wasted no time out of the locker room building their lead, going on an 8-0 run to grow their lead to ten and go up 43-33 with 7:36 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Wildcats added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-45 edge. Northwestern took advantage of nine Minnesota turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.
Northwestern kept widening their lead in the final ten minutes, cruising the rest of the way for the 76-62 win.
