EVANSTON, ILL. – Northwestern is back home to host Minnesota and celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip-off between the Gophers and the 'Cats is set for 2 p.m.
The Wildcats (8-18, 1-14) will meet the Gophers (10-16, 3-12) for the first time this season, hoping to get back in the win column. Northwestern holds a narrow 39-38 edge in the all-time series against Minnesota after defeating them 65-60 in the first round of last season's Big Ten Tournament. The last time the 'Cats hosted the Gophers at Welsh-Ryan Arena was in December of 2020, a game Northwestern won 80-51.
Last time out, the Wildcats came out strong against Rutgers in Piscataway, taking as much as a ten-point lead in the first half. They couldn't hold on through the finish, however, and ended up falling 62-48.
In the loss, the 'Cats were led by Caileigh Walsh, who scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and collected two steals and a block. Sydney Wood also reached double figures for the third time in her last six games with 11 points, while Jillian Brown's 11 points got her to double-digits as well.
As a team, the 'Cats' four blocks brought them to 4.6 blocks per game this season, which is good for second in the Big Ten and 29th in the NCAA. Walsh and Wood both blocked one shot against Rutgers, giving them 31 and 29 blocks on the season respectively. Those numbers make Walsh fifth in the conference and Wood just behind her, in sixth.
After Saturday's game, the 'Cats will wrap up their home season on Thursday as they face off with Wisconsin on senior day. Tip-off in that game is set for 6:00 p.m.
